A Letter To My Young Black King in America

To My Young Black KING in America:

Your melanin is one of a kind. Your curly, wavy hair is your crown. Your nose is perfectly shaped. Your deep brown eyes are the 8th wonder of the world. I vow to teach you everyday to love the skin you’re in. I vow to teach you that you are allowed to cry, show emotion, and express yourself however you see fit.

One day we’re gonna have to sit you down & have a talk, to teach you the CODE. This CODE is very important because it could be the difference between you coming home at night or me getting a gut-wrenching phone call. Your great grandpas, grandpas, uncles, & father have all had to live by this CODE. You’re not alone. When approached by law enforcement, your CODE is different than others & you must accept that.

Some people will treat you different simply because of the hue of your skin. People will say you’re too black to be their friend and some will say you aren’t black enough. Teachers may stereotype you, you may be the only black kid in class, & others may feel threatened by you. But that’s okay, because a KING leads. A KING sets examples. A KING stands up for what’s right & never backs down. A KING is confident but humble. And most of all, a KING takes pride in who he is & where he comes from. I love you son.

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH !!!

✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿🇺🇸❤️💙
